The Solar Astrophysics Group's research focuses on solar activity. Research is based around understanding the trigger of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, and solar wind formation and propagation. Much of the research makes use of space mission data sources such as Hinode, IRIS and the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The group is involved in planning observations for operating missions, and developing and designing instruments for new space missions. The Solar Orbiter mission, to be launched in 2020, will form the basis of new discoveries in the coming years.
